Single-key shortcuts (tools, weights, rendering modes, sizes and so on) don’t work while you’re editing text.

Editing

  • Undo: ⌘Z
  • Redo: ⇧⌘Z
  • Cut: ⌘X
  • Copy: ⌘C
  • Paste: ⌘V
  • Paste in Place: ⇧⌘V
  • Paste in Front: ⌘F
  • Paste Behind: ⌘B
  • Duplicate: ⌘D
  • Transform Again: ⇧⌘D (repeats the last move, rotation or nudge)
  • Delete: Delete
  • Copy Style: ⌥⌘C
  • Paste Style: ⌥⌘V
  • Reset fill and stroke to the defaults: D
  • Swap fill and stroke: ⇧X
  • Rename Layer: ⌘R

Selecting

  • Select All: ⌘A
  • Select All On Layer: ⌥⌘A
  • Deselect All: ⇧⌘A
  • Add to or remove from the selection: Shift-click, or Shift-drag a selection rectangle
  • Enter an editing scope: double-click a group, clipping group, proxy, path or text object
  • Deselect, then leave the editing scope: Escape (each press goes back one step)

Moving and transforming

  • Nudge: arrow keys (1 pt; change it in Settings)
  • Nudge further: Shift-arrow keys (10 pt)
  • Move horizontally or vertically only: Shift-drag
  • Duplicate while moving: Option-drag
  • Turn off snapping: hold Control while dragging
  • Keep proportions while resizing: Shift-drag a resize handle
  • Resize from the centre: Option-drag a resize handle
  • Rotate in 45° steps: hold Shift while rotating
  • Round just one corner: Option-drag a corner rounding handle (if the corners aren’t linked, this rounds them all instead)
  • Edit a corner’s radius: double-click its corner rounding handle
  • Measure distances: with something selected, hold Option and hover over another object
  • Cancel a drag: Escape

Arrange

  • Bring to Front: ⇧⌘]
  • Bring Forward: ⌘]
  • Send Backward: ⌘[
  • Send to Back: ⇧⌘[
  • Group: ⌘G
  • Ungroup: ⇧⌘G
  • Lock Object: ⌘2

Drawing shapes

  • Draw a square, circle or 45° line: Shift-drag
  • Draw from the centre: Option-drag
  • Place without snapping: hold Control before you press
  • More or fewer sides, points or wave cycles: ↑ or ↓ while dragging out a polygon, star or wave
  • Cancel the shape you’re drawing: Escape

  • Corner point: click
  • Smooth point: click and drag
  • Pull out only the forward handle: hold Option while dragging out a point
  • Move the point you’re placing: hold Space while dragging
  • Draw a segment at 45°: Shift-click
  • Keep a handle at 45°: hold Shift while dragging it
  • Turn a point into a corner: Option-click it
  • Add a point to a segment: Option-click the segment
  • Show every point’s handles: hold Option
  • Place without snapping: hold Control
  • Close the path: click the first point
  • Finish the path: double-click, Return or Escape
  • Undo the last point: ⌘Z

  • Add a point: Option-click the path
  • Toggle smooth/corner point: double-click a point
  • Pull out handles: Option-drag a point
  • Break a pair of handles: Option-drag a handle
  • Remove a handle: Option-click it
  • Keep a handle at 45°: hold Shift while dragging it
  • Join: ⌘J
  • Combine Paths: ⌘8
  • Break Apart Paths: ⇧⌘8

Text

  • Edit text: double-click a text object
  • Finish editing: Return, Tab or Escape

Viewing

  • Pan: hold Space and drag, or scroll
  • Zoom: hold Option or ⌘ and scroll, or pinch
  • Zoom In: ⌘=
  • Zoom Out: ⌘-
  • Actual Size: ⌘1
  • Zoom to Fit: ⌘0
  • Zoom to Selection: ⌥⌘0
  • Enter Full Screen: ⌃⌘F

  • Show Grid: ⌘’
  • Snap to Grid: ⌥⌘’
  • Snap to Smart Guides: ⌘U
  • Lock Guides: ⌥⌘;
  • Add a guide: drag from a ruler
  • Set a guide’s position numerically: double-click the guide
  • Delete a guide: drag it off the canvas, or select it and press Delete
  • Move a margin on the current weight only: Option-drag the margin guide
  • Turn off snapping: hold Control while dragging

Windows and palettes

  • Show Layers: ⌥⌘L
  • Show Preview: ⌥⌘P
  • Show Animation Preview: ⌥⇧⌘P
